The Impact of Elderberries on Viruses

In 2019, ScienceDaily published a study from Australia that confirmed the timeless indigenous knowledge that elderberries had positive health benefits and antiviral properties. The study noted that elderberries "inhibit [a] virus's entry and replication in human cells, and can help strengthen a person's immune response to the [influenza] virus."

This is timely information given the Coronavirus pandemic, but we are not inferring that elderberries fight off Covid-19. An important point to remember is that elderberries are poisonous, cannot be eaten raw and they are definitely toxic to animals. The Elderberry plant is also often confused with the highly poisonous Pokeweed.

For additional information on the numerous studies done over the years and articles related to elderberries and their antiviral properties, take a look at reputable sources online such as The University of Florida and the USDA.
