Crows Teach Knowledge

We have discussed crows in the past. As you might recall, crows are known to use tools, solve puzzles, and apply facial recognition of humans. Naughty or nice, they'll remember one human from another (hmmm...could Santa be a crow?...I digress).

Recent research in Proceedings of The Royal Society B indicates crows teach each other, especially their young, the difference between good and bad humans. Collectively, the crows will scold bad humans by sounding an alarm "kaw" at the bad human with wing and tail flicking. They have even been observed mobbing bad humans, whereby numerous crows will scold and perhaps even dive at them. Perhaps Alfred Hitchcock was onto something with The Birds...ah, but I digress again.

Past studies have also revealed crows possess a form of consciousness. They understand time, water displacement, and death and can make complex decisions. No wonder tribes like the Lakota see corvid (ravens and crows) as a symbol of wisdom. Kȟaŋği tȟáŋka (raven) is also seen as a trickster and a shapeshifter. Ponder these facts while I head out for more shiny bits of knowledge. Cya.
